Participation at Conferences, Workshops and/or Conventions Policy #4130

The Board of Education recognizes its responsibility to provide an opportunity for each employee and board member to grow professionally and be able to enhance his/her area of responsibility. The Board encourages the participation at conferences, workshops and/or conventions.
In order to control both the investment of time and funds necessary to implement this policy, the Board authorizes the Superintendent of Schools to establish guidelines for the administration of this policy.
Funds for participation at such functions will be budgeted for on an annual basis.
A calendar of conferences, conventions, and workshops be presented to the Board along with a budgeted amount. The Board will periodically decide which meetings appear to be most promising in terms of producing direct and indirect benefits to the school district. At least annually the Board will identify those new ideas or procedures and/or cost benefits that can be ascribed to participation at such meetings.
When funds are limited, the superintendent will designate who would be most appropriate to participate.
Selection of staff will be on a rotating basis dependent upon program availability with consideration given to staff members’ schedule within his/her program.
Rationale will be presented with each request to the
Superintendent of Schools. Included in the rationale will be a statement on how
attendance will benefit the
Requests to attend conferences, workshops or conventions are to be in the Superintendent’s Office at least one month, whenever possible, prior to the next scheduled Board meeting.
If approved, the employee shall submit a written report within one month upon return from the conference, workshop, or convention.
