LAUREL SPRINGS SCHOOL DISTRICT

Dress and Grooming                                                                                                                          Policy #5132

_____________________________________________________________________________

The Board recognizes that each pupil’s dress and grooming are manifestations of personal style and individual preference.  The Board will not interfere with the prerogative of pupils and their parents/guardians to make decisions regarding pupil’s appearance, except when such choices negatively impact the educational program of the schools.  Appropriate dress for pupils of the Laurel Springs School District should be based on common sense and pride in personal appearance.

Notwithstanding the Board’s view that dress and appearance are matters of individual choice, the Board also recognizes that certain dress and grooming practices are deleterious to the educational mission of the District, and must be avoided.  In this regard, the Board establishes the standards of dress and grooming practice that include, but are not limited to, the following:

1.             Dress and grooming of the individual shall not present a health or safety hazard to the student or to others in the schools, nor restrict the student’s freedom of movement or vision necessary for learning.

2.             Dress and grooming of the individual shall not interfere with the educational mission of the schools by creating a disruption, spectacle, or disorder.

3.                    Dress and grooming of the individual shall not cause excessive wear or damage to school property.

The Board authorizes the Superintendent, working in conjunction with the building principal, to develop, and at least annually review, a set of regulations for dress and grooming appropriate to the Laurel Springs School District.  Such regulations shall constitute the Administration’s implementation procedures for this policy, shall be provided in writing to each student on the first day of school.  The regulations shall include a discussion of disciplinary actions that result from violation of these standards.
